VIDAA at CSI LAA Congress in Frankfurt

During the recent CSI LAA Focus Congress in Frankfurt, the VIDAA platform from Pompeu Fabra University stood out with its participation in a left atrial appendage intervention broadcast live from the Salamanca Hospital. VIDAA allows for personalized planning of such interventions using the patient’s virtual heart to simulate the best treatment.

Last Friday, November 10th, within the context of the CSI LAA Focus Congress in Frankfurt, a real left atrial appendage operation was broadcast live from the Salamanca Hospital, utilizing the UPF’s VIDAA platform for surgical planning.

VIDAA is a web platform developed by Dr. Oscar Cámara’s team, the main researcher of the Physense research group, from the BCN Med Tech research unit, a TECNIO center of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC). Its aim is to assist doctors in planning the intervention for closing the left atrial appendage, finding the optimal device configuration for a successful intervention. This platform creates a virtual copy of the patient’s left atrium, replicates the device deployment, and incorporates advanced flow simulations to offer post-intervention scenarios to improve accuracy and thus reduce the risk of complications during and after the procedure.

These types of interventions are increasingly common in patients with atrial fibrillation, the most common arrhythmia, especially among the elderly. It originates in the left atrium of the heart and increases the chances of suffering a stroke.

Dr. Mill: “This was one of the first cases using advanced flow simulations in a virtual replica of the patient’s atrium, becoming a practical example of personalized medicine in surgeries.”

The congress in question, the CSI LAA Focus, is an international summit focused on stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation. Its program provides a comprehensive view of left atrial appendage closure operations, including live cases and exploration of the most innovative devices. In this regard, the successful outcome of the live intervention planned with VIDAA has been fundamental in gaining visibility among medical professionals and international recognition, as stated by Dr. Jordi Mill, a researcher on the project: “During the intervention’s planning, a device position and size were chosen as ideal for that patient, and during the live case, the device was placed in the same position that the VIDAA platform had suggested. This was one of the first cases using advanced flow simulations in a virtual replica of the patient’s atrium, becoming a practical example of personalized medicine in surgeries.”
